BINGHAMTON – It was a tough loss for the Chenango Hellcats Legion baseball team on Monday July 10, as the visitors eventually succumbed to a powerful offensive laden inning from Chenango Forks in the 7-4 setback.
Scoring one run a piece in the first and second innings gave the Hellcats an early 2-0 lead.
The Hellcats maintained their lead over the course of the game, until the bottom of the fifth when the wheels fell off.
Despite the Hellcats ace in Tommy Voce, on the mound, the Chenango County team had no answer as Chenango Forks knocked in run after run all to the dismay of the bobbling and misplaying Hellcats defense.
The Hellcats would record six total errors in the game, and out of the seven runs scored by the Hellcats opposition – none would be recorded as an earned run.
But it was more than just the errors that earned Chenango Forks extra outs. The hometown ‘Forks team sunk its teeth in by knocking around seven hits, and walking five times on the evening.
However, with time running out in the game and the final outs awaiting, the Hellcats had one more rally in them.
With the bases loaded with one out in the top of the seventh inning, a Seth Simmons walk cut the deficit to 7-3 as Connor Graven-Briggs scored. Paden Burlison followed up in the next at bat with a single, scoring Jon Heggie to put the Hellcats in business, despite trailing 7-4.
Unfortunately, the Chenango County Hellcats put up goose-eggs in their subsequent at-bats, by Nate Scheer striking out for the second out, followed by Connor Graven-Briggs’ attempt at stealing home – which was immediately foiled, committing the final out – thus ending the game.
Jon Heggie scored a pair of runs in the set-back, and Graven-Briggs, Simmons, and Tyler King each recorded two hits apiece with Simmons and King each going for extra-base hits.
The Hellcats return to the diamond for some intense inter-program play as they play the Junior Hellcats Legion team on Thursday, July 13, with first pitch slated for 6 p.m. at Norwich High School’s Veterans Field.
Stay tuned for a full game report on the Tuesday, July 11 game, in tomorrow’s edition of The Evening Sun. Binghamton Post #1645 defeated the Hellcats by a score of 12-0.
